We are delighted to open the Great Malvern Festival of Singing with a special recital featuring distinguished British baritone Andrew Mayor, accompanied by renowned conductor and organist Piers Maxim.

Andrew Mayor has enjoyed a rich and varied career in the dramatic operatic repertoire. Born in Manchester, he studied at Oxford University before receiving a postgraduate scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has performed numerous operatic roles across the UK, including appearances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Scottish Opera.

Internationally, Andrew has toured the USA with Columbia Artists, sung Germont and Escamillo in Malaysia, performed the title role in Rigoletto across Germany and Europe with the Compagnia d’Opera Italiana di Milano, and appeared as Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) in Tokyo. Recent performances include Don Carlo in La forza del destino and Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for Regents Opera. He currently divides his time between Berlin and London.

Piers Maxim began his musical journey as a boy chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and later served as Organ Scholar at Christ’s Hospital. He went on to become a Choral Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, earning a degree in Music, and later studied conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Throughout his career, Piers has worked extensively as a conductor, chorus master, organist, and composer. His operatic work includes engagements with Staatsoper Berlin, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Netherlands Nationale Reisopera, and the Bayreuth Festival. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Chorus Master at Scottish Opera, conducting La Bohème and Aida. He then became Chorus Master at La Monnaie in Brussels (2004–2009), collaborating on over 40 operas in both staged and concert formats.

Together, Andrew Mayor and Piers Maxim will present a captivating recital of opera and song, featuring works by Elgar, Wagner, and Verdi. This promises to be a memorable evening and a fitting launch to our festival.
