“Love flows as the brook flows…” Tuesday 18th August 8pm
Roderick Williams OBE, baritone

18th August 2026 | 8.00pm
Chapel of Malvern College, Great Malvern
Some concerts feel less like performances and more like journeys — intimate, poetic, and deeply human. Love flows as the brook flows… is a song recital shaped around one of the great narratives of the Romantic imagination: Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, a cycle in which love, longing, nature, and heartbreak flow together as irresistibly as the stream that guides the young miller on his path.
In this specially curated programme, selected songs from Die schöne Müllerin are interwoven with song settings by British and Irish composers who, across generations, have returned to the same timeless themes: love discovered, love idealised, love lost, and the natural world as mirrors to the inner life. The result is a recital that feels both unified and richly varied, moving seamlessly between German Romanticism and the golden age of English song.
Few singers are better suited to this repertoire than Roderick Williams OBE, whose storytelling, textual insight, and warm baritone voice have made him one of the most admired singers of his generation. His appearances range from the world’s great opera houses and concert halls to landmark national occasions, including the Last Night of the Proms and the Coronation of King Charles III. He is joined by the highly acclaimed pianist Susie Allan, whose sensitivity and musicianship make her one of the finest collaborators in song today.
Alongside Schubert, the programme features songs by Butterworth, Trimble, Vaughan Williams, Boyle, Gurney, Clarke, Head, Quilter, Finzi, Ireland, Howells, and Britten — composers who transform poetry into moments of extraordinary intimacy and beauty.
Set in the glowing acoustic of the Chapel of Malvern College, this is an evening for anyone who loves poetry, nature, and music that speaks directly to the heart.
